Summary from your leaflet: over 99% effective contraception, commonly used for heavy periods, may be used as the progesterone part of HRT for some people, “fit and forget”, long-term option up to 5 years, consultations with Dr Rachel Hughes or Dr Rachel Taylor.

About the coil (IUD/IUS)

  • Two main types: a non-hormonal coil (IUD, copper) and a hormonal coil (IUS).
  • Highly effective contraception: both types are very effective when fitted correctly.
  • Heavy periods: the hormonal coil (IUS) can reduce bleeding for many people and is sometimes used as a treatment option for heavy periods.
  • HRT: in some cases, a hormonal coil can be used to provide the progestogen/progesterone part of HRT (your clinician will advise what’s suitable).

What to expect

1) Consultation

We’ll discuss your medical history, what you want the coil for (contraception, heavy periods, HRT support), and which type may be suitable. You can ask questions and talk through benefits and possible side effects.

2) Fitting appointment

The coil is fitted by a trained clinician. You may have cramping during and after the fitting. Your clinician can advise on pain relief and what to do if you feel unwell afterwards.

3) Aftercare

  • Some cramping and spotting can be common in the days after fitting.
  • You’ll be advised how to check the threads and when to seek help.
  • If you have severe pain, heavy bleeding, fever, or feel very unwell, seek urgent advice.
