Some medicines for minor illnesses can be bought over the counter without a prescription.

This means you may be able to treat yourself without needing to see a GP.

Medicines you can buy without a prescription

Simple painkillers and cough remedies, for example, can be bought directly from supermarkets, pharmacies and other stores.

Other types of medicine, such as eyedrops or emergency contraception, are available without a prescription but need a pharmacist’s supervision. These are usually available from behind the pharmacy counter.

Your local pharmacist can offer advice about common minor illnesses and help you choose the most appropriate treatment.

Prescription-only medicines

Some medicines, such as antibiotics, must be prescribed by a qualified health professional.

This may include a:

  • GP
  • hospital doctor
  • dentist
  • nurse
  • pharmacist
  • optometrist
  • physiotherapist
  • podiatrist

Repeat prescriptions

If you take medication regularly and your condition is stable, your GP may be able to offer a long-term repeat prescription.

This means your pharmacist may be able to supply your medicine at regular intervals, helping to save you a trip to the GP practice.

If you have any problems with your medicine, please tell your pharmacist. They can speak to your GP if needed.
